Arsenic in your apple juice?

We are huge apple juice fans at home. The boys love to drink it (watered down, of course) but it might soon come to an end. I was watching The Today Show the other day and was taken aback when I heard that apple juice, as well as grape juice, contains arsenic. Yup, heard it right, ARSENIC!!

1. Symbol As A highly poisonous metallic element having three allotropic form

Arsenic comes in both organic and inorganic form, and some levels of it are found in the air we breathe, water we drink and in the ground (organic arsenic). The inorganic form of arsenic is known to increase the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. Why is there arsenic in apple juice? Dr Oz carried his own investigation and, in an independent lab, found out that there are a few apple juice brands with high levels of arsenic. But of course the FDA says that said levels are so low that they will have no effect in our kids’ health whatsoever.

Even though arsenic has been banned in the US for decades, it is not always regulated in other countries (60% of our apple juice concentrate comes from China). So to some extent there is inorganic arsenic in our juice.

The FDA regulates the arsenic levels in water (10 parts per billion max.) but why don’t they make the same regulations on both apple and grape juice?

1 drop of inorganic arsenic is enough for me to ban all apple juice in my house. I guess we will have to try new juices and find a new favorite!

If you can find locally/regionally made apple juice, that might be a good alternative.
