And potty training begins

I’ve never given too much thought to potty training. A is 2 years old now. And potty training begins!

For a little over a week every time I say I have to go potty he decides he is going to. He runs behind me. Takes his diaper off and sits on his truck shaped potty. And when he is wearing a shirt he tries to take it off. I think that for him going potty means being naked.

He sits on his potty and starts looking through daddy’s magazines in search for cars. After, I don’t know, 3 magazines he decides he is done.

That’s all. Every time I try to take him potty he either freaks out or simply runs away from me.

I know he is ready. Every time he is pooping he hides from us. If you dare talk to him he gives you a dirty look and yells NO! I once told him that if he needed to go potty he could go to the bathroom all by him self, that mommy did not need to be there too. He got up and ran as fast as he could to the bathroom. Nothing happened. No pee or poo. Only cars in a magazine.

I really don’t know where to actually begin. His pediatrician told us to take him potty, without asking him, as soon as he wakes up and after he eats and before he goes to bed. Tried it and he freaks out. Starts kicking and screaming and I really don’t want potty training to be something scary for him. He is already scared of the big potty, I don’t know why.

I’ve heard all sort of tips for potty training. From using marshmallows or cheerios, to letting him go to the bathroom with us. To dumping his poo in the toilet and explain that’s where it goes and let him flush the toilet (which sort of back fired, now all he wants to do is flush the toilets!).

Last week I got this DVD from Pull-Ups** (potty training success DVD) in my mail. I will watch it after the boys go to bed tonight. It comes with tips and songs and games to make it easier and flexible. I hope this all goes well and that he is potty trained in no time! I once promised him that once he is ready to go potty all by him self he is free to run around the house naked! And I will hold my promise.

Do you have any tips or advice to share with an unexperienced mommy?

** I got my copy from https://sslprotected.com/pullupsdvd/ I am not sure if they are still giving copies away, but it is worth the try!

I read this and had to laugh… My 3 year old grandson – was almost totally trained – and decided that he really wasn’t interested in it… SO – since then – the job goes on. Also – some friends of years gone by – tried to potty train their son – by having him sit backward on the toilet and eat treat??? That was a TOTAL backfire – because it progressed to his eating all of his meals backward on the toilet. Thought I’d share – they eventually learn but – oh the different things you try! Also – the 3 year old grandson and his older siblings love to dance to the potty song – but – he’s not really interested in it other than the music..

Wish I could help with this one. My 17 month old is excited about the potty, he sits on it and even though we’ve been practicing EC since 8 months off and on, recently he only sits on it. No elimination happens. We are working on it slowly….but in now rush. All I can say is don’t make much of a deal of it and then maybe he won’t. But I’m not in your situation….I know it can be so frustrating.

    He doll,

You were following me but I recently changed my followers to members, so I’d love for you to come back and join my site. I’ve gotten rid of google followers and now have members…does that make sense?

    Thanks a bunch!

Potty training is such a headache! With my daughter I would put a doll on the potty and squeeze a wet paper towel behind it so it looked like it was going. So silly, I know! But it seemed to work- she just started sitting on the potty without my prompting her and we took it from there. Good luck!

Oh I so hear you. I have a 2-1/ year old who not interested at all. With the Elmo potty he just wants to play. The seat on the toilet: he’ll sit on if the lid is closed, but not when it’s open. Every time I bring up the ‘potty’ word or ask if he needs to go it is as if WWIII breaks out. Horrible. I have no idea how to go about it. I hate the potty training already with a passion. Probably not a good thing when it’s all supposed to be about encouragement and fun. Fun?? How on EARTH can this process be FUN?!?!?!

I was stopping by via Mama’s Little Nestwork. Just became your newest follower and will certainly continue to check in on your potty training efforts. How did you get that DVD? Did you request it??
