I was never a physical kid when growing up. I was never part of a team or took much interest on sports. In fact, my parents never pushed us to go play outside. We were more focused on school. No wonder staying fit is kind of hard for me. Yes, I am small (or so I’ve been told) but I am not one to go for a jog, a bike ride, or head to the gym.
My boys have been the exact opposite of me when I was their age. A. loves to run and play sports. He has a mean pitch! That ball goes as straight as straight can go! Kicking the ball comes so natural to him! If I try to kick it straight it always go left. J. is more of my little monkey. Boy loves to climb! Specially if it is on the couch…which he always gets in trouble for but I think he loves that part as much as the climbing action!
Lately I’ve been thinking about doing yoga once more. Before I got pregnant with A. I did yoga for two weeks straight. But I wanted to get back on track since yoga is something you can easily do at home. Then it hit me, why don’t I get the boys involved into it as well!?
I thought the boys were going to love the idea of doing yoga with mommy, wrong. I mean, they already hang from my legs and walk between them as if they were cats, I seriously thought they’d like to join in the fun! But not really. I decided to put the DVD on anyways hoping that they’d see mom and would want to join me.
The DVD comes with two 20 minutes story sessions that incorporate easy yoga poses that any kid can do. The instructor, Ahmed Fahmy, tells the story in such a way that it absorbs kids’ attention. So there you have me, following the instructions given while my two boys watched me from the couch, probably rolling their eyes at me.
Soon after, as we all picked our condor eggs, A. decided to join in. He started by simply listening. And I was more than happy with this. It was start. Before I even knew it he was following along!
As we were doing the cobra pose I could hear A. hissing at me! Yoga soon became a game to him. He would be silly and over exaggerate the poses. He would answer to the instructor and follow the story as it evolved. The hissing never stopped! Soon a pose would become a ninja trick or a karate chop as he yelled “heeee-ya!”.
I tried to tag along for the session as I snapped some photos. When we got to this pose (which I forgot the name of) I was off balance and trying as hard as possible not to fall in front of A. (J. completely ignored us). I mean, I gotta be cool in front of my kids, right!? Look at him! This was his very first try at yoga and he did ten times better than I did!
He did amazingly great! He didn’t put much thought into it, at all!! And he never fell, was never off balance. Yoga comes so easy to kids! And Storyland Yoga made it fun! After the session was over he had so much energy! He truly loved it! Now I have to get J. involved. Still no luck with him, but one of this days I will get him to join his brother and me!
