When you’re looking to create more space in the home, extending can seem like the logical solution. However, it can be extremely expensive which means those on a small budget would need to do a lot of saving before they can afford it. The good news is there are ways to add additional space to the property without extending. American barns are just one unique idea that you may want to consider.

What is an American barn?

American barns are similar to garages, only they can be used for a wide range of purposes. Add them to store tools, as a garage, workshop or even stables. You can customise them to fit your needs and they are a lot more affordable than an extension. It is even possible to turn one side of the barn into a veranda.

The choices are endless and it provides additional space away from the home. Most companies can create an American barn based upon your own specific requirements. So not only are you adding extra space, you are able to choose exactly how that space is going to look and function.

Partitioning existing rooms

If you have fairly large rooms, a good idea provided by House to Home is to put up partitions. A partition will turn one room into two. Plasterboard works exceptionally well as a partition. It can be attached to wooden frames and skimmed over with plaster. If you plan on knocking down walls before portioning, you will need to enlist the help of a structural engineer. They will check to see that it is safe to do so. Using partitions, you could turn the kitchen into a kitchen/dining room, the bathroom into a bathroom/dressing room and the bedroom into a bedroom with ensuite.

Adding additional bedrooms

One of the most common reasons people need an additional room in the home is because they need an extra bedroom. It could be that you are extending your family and there aren’t enough bedrooms for everyone. The loft, cellar or the garage can all be turned into a bedroom if needed. The Real Homes Magazine has some great advice on turning your loft into a bedroom and the things you need to consider. Adding another bedroom not only serves a purpose, but it also makes the home more attractive to buyers if you ever decide to sell.

As you can see, there are many options you can choose to add extra room to the home without spending a fortune on an extension. Be sure to think carefully about which option is right for you. Partitions will need to be given the go ahead from a structural engineer before they are built. You need to ensure they meet specific regulations. If you don’t, you could end up having to rip it down again. It helps to make a floor plan of the home to see exactly where there is enough space to renovate. See how the rooms relate to each other and come up with a plan based on functionality as well as convenience.

I have always dreamed of how awesome it would be to make a home out of a barn. Big doors out to patio. A nice sized loft to sleep in. I would have a big circualar stone fireplace right in the middle. The only rooms that would be totally secluded would be the bathrooms. I would have ceiling fans and walls that had a small area on top and bottom where air could circulate. I think it would be much cheaper to heat and cool that way. Anyway, I could go on but enough said.,

It would be nice to have a barn. It’s ideal when you own a big land.
