So like most mornings I am setting here enjoying my morning cup of coffee, working on my computer, and watching the Today Show. It was a pretty good morning, until our good friend Senator Harry Reid comes on the Today Show. Now I have to be honest, I am not a fan of Obama. With that said I completely agree with the proposed freeze on “Pork Barrel Spending” he announced in his State of the Union.
Senator Reid (D-Nev) has decided to lead the charge against this and is hoping to ensure that park barrel spending stays around for a while. Apparently he thinks he needs an opportunity to pile more debt upon the feet of our grandchildren. So as I set hear, listening to him drone on in an attempt to convince the American public that Obama just wants more power, I can’t help but wounder to myself, when is enough enough? Heck, how many people actually know what number comes after Trillion? At what point will our elected officials finally say, well we don’t really need that $4 million dollar chain gun?
Well I decided to do some research, and see if I couldn’t figure out why Senator Reid is defending this so profusely. Why is Reid on every channel calling out his good friend Obama? Well I think I figured it out. From 2008-2010 Senator Reid and Nevada sponsored over $1.1 Billion in earmark spending for Nevada. WHAT! I can’t help but wounder what $1.1 Billion dollars gets spend on in a 3 year period, so I kept digging around. After about 30 pages into a 50 page document on Nevada earmarks (all between 08-20) I just got tired of reading. In total there was almost 500 earmarks in 3 years for just Neveda. I have included a couple below for you to enjoy.
Nevada Earmarks between 2008-2010:
- $12,792,000 for Tropicana and Flamingo Washes
- $3,760,000 for a M230 30mm Chain Gun Automatic Cannon (Got to have a good chain gun)
- $2,000,000 for California National Historic Trail Interpretive Center
- $1,793,000 for Urban Flood Demonstration Program (just in case you wanted to know how a flood works)
- $1,500,000 for a Paint Booth (I’m not sure what to think here)
While my morning has been informative, it has also been a little disheartening. Looking at debt our country is in, and knowing that there are people like Senator Reid helping to run it makes me fill ill. What are we going to do?
