Moon Trees

So I just watch a brief clip about this on the news and thought it was interesting. Apparently in 1971 Apollo 14 went on what was the third trip to the moons surface. On that mission Stuart Roosa, a former smoke jumper, brought along several tree seeds as a scientific experiment. The trees sees were sorted based on the type of tree with the idea that they would be planted later to determine if a trip into space had any effects on them.. These tree seeds returned to earth and were germinated into over 400 small seedlings. In 1975 & 76 these seedlings were sent all over the world to be planted. Most of the locations were lost, but NASA is now trying to track down their locations. Dr. Dave Williams has been able to put together the following list of Moon Trees and their current locations:

As you can see we have a couple here in Oregon, but none in Portland. I think it would be a fun field trip to take the boys down to see one. As far as scientists can so far, there is no known difference between these trees and the counter-parts. With that said, it still a fun story.

That’s so cool–I’ve never heard about this experiment! Nothing close by here, but hopefully we’ll get to visit some in our travels.
